Introduction to Animation –“Ball Bounce” DVD by Brian Lemay:
This video is a basic introduction to the animation process. It is great for people who are just getting started in animation, whether you’re in grades 6 – 12 or about to enter your first year in a college level animation program.
The first two chapters cover the complete process of making an animated cartoon, from script to character design, to storyboarding, to layout and into the animation department.
Brian then gets into the details of what “key animation” is all about in chapter 3.
Chapter 4 is a clear explanation of timing charts, how to figure timing out, how to write a timing chart and all the subtle variations that are available.
In chapter 5 Brian explains the importance of exposure sheets.
The final chapter is all about animating the “Perpetual Ball Bounce” assignment. You watch the entire process from beginning to end with clear and understandable explanations the whole way.
This is the very first assignment that is given out in all animation schools because it covers some of the most basic principles.
A must have DVD for everyone. |

Animation Exercises - "Descending Energy" DVD by Brian Lemay:
This is the second in a series of DVD's focussing on the basic principles of animation.
This DVD is the follow up to the "Introduction to Animation - Ball Bounce" DVD. It is great for people who are just getting started in animation, whether you're in grades 6 - 12 or about to enter your first year in a college level animation program.
This DVD picks up where the last one left off. We begin with the explanation of descending energy and how it applies to animation. Brian then shows how gravity effects different types of balls.
Brian then takes you through the descending energy ball bounce assignment discussing path of action and timing the action. You get to see the whole process from beginning to end right through to the final pencil test.
Next, Brian goes through the process of animating a balloon dropping - analyzing a real balloon and then deciding how to time it all out, key posing, in-betweening and final pencil test.
Brian then does the bowling ball drop following the same process.
Finally as an added bonus, Brian goes through a double ball bounce assignment and describes the principles of overlapping action and secondary action
These are usually the second, third and fourth assignments given out in most animation schools because it covers some of the most basic principles, this DVD will help you understand them even better. |

Animation Exercises - "Meow" DVD by Brian Lemay:
The first of a whole new DVD video series from Brian Lemay.
This video is an introduction to Character Lip Sync animation.
It's one hour packed with information to help you create your own animation of a character saying the word "meow".
This over-the-shoulder tutorial is ideal for the person who wants to learn more than the typical in-class lectures. You can follow along as Brian guides you through each and every step from plotting out and drawing your key poses, to timing charts, in-betweening and final pencil test.
This is a typical 2nd year college level animation assignment that would be given to introduce the student to the basics of Lip Sync.
You can pause the DVD so that you can follow along and do the exact same steps to create your own character animation. |

Intro to Lip Sync Part 2 - "Absolutely Incredible" DVD Brian Lemay:
This video is a continuation of the introduction to Character Lip Sync animation.
It's over 2 hours packed with information to help you create your own animation of a character saying the words "absolutely incredible".
This DVD covers the process you would follow when using a given sound track. First we listen to a series of different tracks to hear inflections and character types. Next Brian goes through the exposure sheet explaining the soundtrack breakdown. About 1 hour of the DVD covers the process of rough animation, secondary action, and rough in-betweening. The second section goes through the assistant animator's job of cleaning up the keys (some very useful information on line quality here) and then the clean up in-betweener's thought process as they in-between the cleaned up keys.
The final section shows all the different stages in pencil test form talking about the difference between shooting animation on one's or two's and taking the animation all the way to the final color stage with a background and the sound track synced to the animation.
All I can say is: this DVD is "AMAZING!" You can't find a tutorial DVD that comes anywhere near to covering this information as well. It's like you're right in the room with Brian as he talks directly to you about the whole process. |
